About the Mini Residency

Dr. Bennett and Dr. Patel have been offering this very successful course for the last 5 years in the U.S. This course is now being offered for the first time in Canada and is open to Canadian and U.S. dentists (fee is in Canadian funds).

To be successful in setting up a Craniofacial-TMD-Sleep practice, practitioners must have a thorough knowledge of the subject. Just as important is expertise in marketing and managing such a unique practice. Both Dr. Bennett and Dr. Patel will share their experience in creating highly successful and profitable practices.

This course will also help the course participants to prepare for the Diplomate Status in the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain.

Session 1:
Introduction to Sleep Medicine

April 16th - 18th, 2021

  • Screening sleep patients
  • Upper airway evaluation (Hands on)
  • Nasal breathing function (In-office tools for structure and flow of nasal airway)
  • Managing complications in sleep patients

  • Home Sleep Studies vs. Polysomnogram Studies
  • Physiology of normal and abnormal sleep
  • Classification of sleep disorders
  • Pediatric airway
  • Oral Appliance selection

  • Delivery and fitting of oral appliances (course participants
  • OSA and Parasomnia
  • How to market a sleep practice (internal and external)
  • Bite registrations for 2 different sleep appliances

Those attending will be required to bring full arch maxillary and mandibular PVS impressions with a bite registration in maximal intercuspation.  Bite registrations will be taken for the fabrication of two oral appliances.

All attendees will have a home sleep study to evaluate sleep disorders.

Session 2:
Basic Head, Neck & TMJ Anatomy as it relates to Sleep & TMD

July 9th - 11th, 2021

  • Anatomy related to Sleep and TMD
  • Taking a comprehensive history
  • Physical examination
  • Muscle identification and palpation workshop
  • Neuroanatomy

  • Craniofacial Pain and Neuropathic Pain Syndrome
  • TMJ, ROM, Cranial Nerve Evaluation workshop
  • Tempormandibular Joint Disorders
  • Neuropathic Disorder
  • Evaluating health of TMJ function

  • Joint Vibration Analysis
  • Imaging for TMD and Sleep
  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea
  • Sleep Appliances and treatment procedures
  • Insertion 2 different oral sleep appliances for course participants

All attendees will have 2 Oral Sleep Appliances fabricated (a Panthera and a Somnodent appliance).  They will be inserted on the participants at Session 2.

Session 3:
Continuation of TMD & Craniofacial Session

Meet the Mini Residency Program Directors

Terry R. Bennett, DMD

Terry R. Bennett, DMD

Dr. Bennett graduated from the University of Louisville School of Dentistry in 1977. He is entering his 43rd year of private practice with the last 30 being in a practice limited to the treatment of Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction and Sleep Apnea.

He is a member of several organizations and hold certifications in many of these. He has been extremely active in the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain (AACP) serving on the board of directors over a decade.  He served as the Program Chair for 4 years, President for 2 years, and the AACP Institute Director of Education for 3 years. This position entailed organizing and providing education associated with the treatment of TMD and Dental Sleep Medicine. Among the many certifications he has attained are DABCP (Diplomate American Board of Craniofacial Pain), DABCDSM (Diplomate American Board of Craniofacial Dental Sleep Medicine), DABDSM (Diplomate American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine, DAAPM (Diplomate American Academy of Pain Management).

Currently he divides his time between his private practice and lecturing for many different organizations on TMD and Dental Sleep Medicine and enjoying his beach house.

Mayoor Patel, DDS, MS

Mayoor Patel, DDS, MS

Dr. Patel received his dental degree from the University of Tennessee in 1994. After graduation he completed a one-year residency in Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD). In 2011 he completed a Masters in Science from Tufts University in Craniofacial Pain and Dental Sleep Medicine. Dr. Patel has earned a Fellowship in the American Academy of Orofacial Pain, American Academy of Craniofacial Pain, the International College of Craniomandibular Orthopedics, the Academy of General Dentistry and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He also is a Diplomate in the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine, American Board of Orofacial Pain, American Board of Craniofacial Pain and American Board of Craniofacial Dental Sleep Medicine. Dr. Patel is a registered polysomnographic technologist (the 2nd dentist to fulfill the requirements).

Presently, Dr. Patel serves as a board member with the British Society of Dental Sleep Medicine and is a cofounder of the British Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. He also served as examination chair for and American Board of Craniofacial Pain and American Board of Craniofacial Dental Sleep medicine. Presently serves as Director of Clinical Education for Nierman Practice Management, holds adjunct faculty with the Atlanta Sleep School, Tufts University and Augusta University. Has served as a founding and board member of the Georgia Association of Sleep Professionals.

Since 2003, Dr. Patel has limited his practice to the treatment of TMJ Disorders, Headaches, Facial Pain and Sleep Apnea. Additional contributions include published textbook chapters, consumer books (treatment options for sleep apnea, understanding temporomandibular disorders), and various professional and consumer articles.

Dr. Patel speaks nationally and internationally on topics of dental sleep medicine, Orofacial pain and TMJ disorders.
